Sate Tugu Penceng in Menganto, Mojowarno, Jombang, East Java, sends billowing smoke from the courtyard of a corner stall near the Menganto Village Hall, capturing the attention of passersby. However, this isn't just any smoke; it carries the savory aroma of grilled meat. The smoke often leaves those who catch a whiff of it with growling stomachs.

Yes, this smoke emanates from a satay stall that is quite renowned in the Mojowarno area and its vicinity. For those who have tasted their satay and its accompanying peanut sauce, it's common to keep coming back. It's as though they become addicted to the delicious flavors served at this establishment.

Both the beef satay and its sauce are tender and flavorful when chewed. The grilled meat is just right, and the peanut sauce is delicious. What's more, when poured over rice, the rich gravy enhances the taste, delighting the palate.

This is the famous Sate Tugu Penceng stall, named after its location next to Tugu Penceng, a monument that was originally called the Independence Monument of Indonesia.

One of the waitstaff at the satay stall mentioned that the establishment, which serves beef satay, gulai (curry), and rawon (beef soup), has been around for over 40 years. Today, the culinary business is carried on by Hainun Yania, the founder's child.

"The management of this satay stall is now in its second generation," she said recently.

From the beginning, she explained, the location of the Sate Tugu Penceng stall has remained unchanged; it has never moved.

"This stall has also never opened branches anywhere else," she added.

Every day, the stall always seems to have customers. Especially during the late morning, lunchtime, and late afternoon, it's guaranteed to have long lines of patrons.

Due to the high number of customers, the waitstaff mentioned that they are capable of serving 7,000 skewers of beef satay in a day. She said that the stall usually goes through seven waves of skewering each day, with each wave consisting of 1,000 skewers.

As for their opening hours, they start at 7:30 AM until they run out of meat. Typically, when their beef supply is depleted early, the stall closes earlier.

"At the latest, it's 6:00 PM," she explained.
